Summer Games 2015 - Thank You!
By Kelly Scott, Development Coordinator
On June 27th, 200 community members came out to participate in Denver Urban Scholars’ second annual Summer Games. Being our 20th anniversary, we decided to do a throwback theme to the year we were founded – 1995. Teams competed in Olympic-themed events dressed as their favorite 90’s characters all while raising funds for our organization.
Events included Tricycle Racing, Wii Boxing, and Ping Pong. The featured event, Human Foosball ended up as a favorite. The course, which was built by volunteers Claude Harton and Charles Rhoades imitated traditional foosball on a life-size scale. Competition was high, and most folks finished with lots of sweat and big smiles!
There was also a shoot-out at halftime; spots were earned through a lottery. The prize, $10k, could be won if participants were able to make three shots – one from the foul line, one three-pointer, and one half-court. Despite having practiced for the big event, nobody was able to complete the task and the prize remains until next year’s event. Don’t forget to practice, everyone! You’ll get another shot at that $10k next year.
Congratulations to this year’s winners, Team Puppy Crushers. They finished the Summer Games on top, and were especially proud of their Human Foosball performance. You guys rock!
