About Us

Denver Urban Scholars is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping metro Denver students with the greatest need graduate high school and enter higher education with a meaningful life plan for success. The students we serve are those who have potential, but are at risk of dropping out or getting lost in the current system. We require a significant commitment from each student in our programs, and in return, students who choose to be a part of our programs are empowered and inspired to succeed through mentoring, case management, academic support, and financial assistance.

We do this because:

  • One student drops out of high school every 26 seconds in America
  • Only 56% of Denver students graduate high school
  • Colorado ranks 49th out of 50 states in percentage of teen dropouts
  • Early intervention has proven to decrease the likelihood a child will drop out of school

Since our founding in 1995, Denver Urban Scholars has worked to change these statistics, helping young people through our Stepping Stones, Milestones, and Capstones programs.

And our programs work. For the 2012/2013 school year:

  • 91% of students enrolled in our Milestones program graduated from high school
  • 51% of students in our programs increased their GPA from the start of the year
  • 43.5% of tutored students increased their grade point average
  • 93% of students in the program advanced to the next grade on time
