Unlock Possibility: Student & Mentor Stories

December 12th, 2018

Since 1995, our organization has evolved to partner with schools and their students to best serve youth in our community, and during this 2018-2019 school year, Denver Urban Scholars will allow over 550 participants to unlock possibility in their lives.  Our students receive one-on-one mentoring from an engaged adult, individualized services at school helping navigate expectations, peer groups, social-emotional and educational programming, and support for the whole family to collectively propel students into a future they can envision for themselves.

The majority of our students will be the first person in their family to graduate from high school.  Last year, our program had a 93.3% graduation rate and 88% of those students enrolled in a postsecondary program.  Our model for change is proven, but we cannot provide life-changing opportunities for Denver students without your help.  Volunteers, mentors, school partners, parents, our highly trained staff, and donors like you are all key components in the potential possibilities for students in our community.

I am the first in my family that has gone to college. Although the road has been tough at times – not having a family role model to ask for experience was a challenge. However, I have been fortunate enough to succeed with the help from Denver Urban Scholars. They have guided my development closely and have always been there as a network of support. I can honestly say it has impacted my family in a very positive way.

I have been a student with Denver Urban Scholars since I was in the seventh grade, and it is an organization that I credit much of my academic success to. This program has exposed me to opportunities I would not have had access to otherwise. Through the program, I have had two phenomenal mentors, one caring and consistent case manager, and now I am continuing with Capstones. This year I am peer-mentoring an incoming college freshman!

My mentee Miguel is from a single parent immigrant family and like me dreams of being the first to graduate from college. I deeply believe in the idea of paying it forward and it is my responsibility to give back as many did for me and my family years ago when I was a student with Denver Urban Scholars. I hope that I can be there for him to help him realize how much he can accomplish in all aspects of life. I am not only his mentor, he is going to be a life long friend.

This program has given me the strength to lift me out of my addiction and it gave me an abundance of skills to tell my story, speak in front of large groups, find my voice, and make connections with people from all different backgrounds. Denver Urban Scholars taught me how to keep moving, never give up and believe in myself. I’m not sure I would be alive today without the caring adults and staff from this organization.
