Hot Days Bring Cool Memories

Back in April, Denver Urban Scholars teamed up with SOS Outreach and headed up to Breckenridge with 7 students for a day of snowboarding! SOS Outreach is a non-profit that partners with Summit Country resorts to host ski/snowboard trips for students who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to go. For a minimal cost, SOS Outreach provides students with everything they need - clothes, gear, rentals, lift ticket, lesson, lunch etc.

For nearly all of our students, it was their first time snowboarding. If you have had the pleasure of learning to snowboard, you know it can be a long, sore, and potentially frustrating first day. I had to choose my words carefully when talking with students beforehand, as I didn’t want to deter them before they have even tried snowboarding. I must admit that I underestimated the stamina of our students—they were absolute champs! When the lesson was getting underway on the bunny hill, I wasn’t sure if they (or their legs) were going to last until 3pm. Not only did everyone last the whole day, but students wanted to keep going! They were all disappointed when the day came to an end and it was time to head home.

The weather could not have been more cooperative! It was a gorgeous and sunny day and based on the fact that ALL students were asleep in the car before getting back to Denver suggests they had fun too! A shout out to Addison (mentor) and Maddy (staff) who joined us for the trip—we couldn’t have made the day happen without you!
