Keeping up with the Capstones
Denver Urban Scholars supports students beyond high school graduation through the Capstones program, managed by Esmeralda Rodriguez. This program is focused on supporting our graduates through their first year of college at participating schools. Read about some recent Capstones events below!
Ready, Set, College!
We would like to give a special thank you to our partners at Mile High United Way for hosting 3 of our Capstones scholars at their annual Ready, Set, College event. Ready, Set, College! was organized by Mile High United Way and is targeted toward first-generation college students who are heading to school in Fall 2018. Scholars participated in workshops focused on time and financial management skills, as well as encouragement and advice to help get them excited and equipped for school. Graduates also had the opportunity to listen to inspirational words from Chris Herndon, Councilman for District 8, and received a bag full of school essentials. Our three participating scholars have just begun their first year at the Community College of Denver!
Auraria Campus Tour
It is never too early to start planning for the future- especially when it comes to attending college! In August, Esmeralda led Denver Urban Scholars high school students and their mentors on a tour of the Auraria campus. On their tour, the group learned about programs and services provided by the Community College of Denver, University of Colorado Denver, and Metropolitan State University of Denver. Scholars who continue their education at any of these institutions have the opportunity to continue into our Capstones program and participate in college-level Peer Mentoring. Our Capstones Peer Mentoring program matches incoming first year students with an upperclassman (also a DUS graduate) for a year. The Peer Mentors provide additional support during the first year of college, which can be a difficult transition.
Capstones Kickoff Event
The Capstones program hosted its Kickoff event for incoming and current college students in August. Scholars learned essential tools for navigating their first year of college and had the opportunity to network with new peers. We are very excited and proud to have scholars attend nine post-secondary institutions throughout Colorado and one out of state! Best of luck this fall to all of our Capstones scholars!
